Mapping the Money: A Funding Roadmap for Fuelling Growth

The Challenge: A Canadian clean‑technology company developing advanced thermoelectric generation modules was ready to move from prototype to market. The team wanted to accelerate growth without giving up equity, focusing on non‑dilutive funding to advance product development and commercialization.

The founders knew there were many potential programs across federal, provincial, and municipal levels, but the landscape felt opaque and time‑consuming to navigate. They asked me to design a Funding Roadmap that identified the most relevant opportunities, built alignment with their technology stage, and connected those options to tangible next steps.

My Approach: I began with a deep understanding of the company’s technology, intellectual property, and market applications. From there, I mapped funding opportunities to each stage of their innovation journey - from R&D through demonstration and scale‑up - while identifying the project concepts that would strengthen their case.

This included linking activities to Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), helping the team see where additional validation, testing, or integration work would make them more competitive for specific categories of funding. The roadmap became both a funding strategy and a technology planning tool, showing how each project could move the company closer to commercialization.

I also created a custom tracker to organize opportunities, timelines, and application requirements and provided recommendations on proposal development, partnerships, and funding readiness.

The Outcome: The result was a clear, actionable roadmap that gave the leadership team:

  • A view of priority funding streams aligned to their stage of growth and TRL targets

  • Defined projects suitable for funding and partner engagement

  • A structured approach for tracking opportunities and next steps

  • Confidence to pursue funding strategically rather than reactively

Within weeks, the company was advancing conversations with potential collaborators and preparing their first demonstration‑based funding applications.

The Impact: The roadmap shifted how the client approached funding — from chasing programs to strategically planning for them. It became a living document supporting not just financial objectives but technology and market development as well.

For me, it reinforced how a thoughtful advisory process can help innovators translate complex funding ecosystems into clear pathways for growth — aligning technical advancement, financial strategy, and impact.

Ready to connect your innovation roadmap to the right sources of funding? I help technology‑driven organizations identify projects, plan TRL advancement, and secure non‑dilutive funding that supports their growth strategy. Let’s talk.
